Capt. Shawn's Zambia Adventure, Part 1
When I was growing up in South Florida, life was one large adventure. So when I received a call from my cousin Jimmy Markel about going to Africa for 3 weeks, it didn't take much to bend my arm. I found myself thinking about when we were kids, Jimmy and I playing in the tall grass pretending we were on a Safari, hunting dangerous game and just being kids. The more I thought about the trip, the more I knew this was one adventure I was not going to miss. I started planning for my trip just like I do my Airboat Adventures, check list, check list and more check lists. Being a pilot I am a huge fan of check lists and for this trip I was not going to forget anything. I talked to my friend and customer Mark Knolting from The Africa Adventure Company. Mark gave me a lot of great ideas on what I would need and what to expect. After a series of vaccination shots and planning, the day had finally arrived. Our first stop Atlanta, GA. I met my cousin, he likes to be called Jim now, and his friend Larry Bohnen at the Hampton in Atlanta. After a great dinner, a quick inventory of our gear and a good night sleep, we were off. On the plane I could not help but to think about my wife and three kids, a lot can happen in three weeks and I prayed they would be OK. My wife is a crack shot with a pistol and with a 100 lb German Shepard as a pet, what was I worrying about?
